The GOLFORAMA Scene - 2010/11 Season

HENRY de GRAEFF
NATIONAL GOLFORAMA CHAIRMAN
The Golforama involvement at the professional Tournaments has once again been
recognised and appreciated by players, organisers and spectators. In addition,
the work that our TV spotters put in at the major events has been acknowledged
by both the Super Sport and European Tour Production teams. The time devoted by
our volunteers kept the Sunshine Tour live scoring website and leader board
information up to date at 13 Winter, 10 Summer and 4 Co-sanctioned events.
A highlight in December was the recognition of our 30 years involvement and
dedication to the Million Dollar and subsequent Nedbank Golf Challenge. A
presentation was made to Golforama at a Cocktail Party prior to the start of the
2010 event. Questions are often asked as to who gets invited to work at Sun
City. In simple terms - "those individuals who have given up a considerable
amount of their time to help at the Tournaments throughout the year". As with
everything in Nomads, participation is recognised.
This
last 12 months has brought a number of challenges especially the weather.
Weather delays are as disruptive to Nomads as they are to the Professional
golfers. The Co-sanctioned events were the hardest hit and it was only through
some innovative scheduling that they were completed in 4 days. My thanks to all
the Golforama helpers who withstood the rain and cold through Winter and the
boredom of rain delays through Summer - without your dedication a large number
of Junior Golfers would be worse off. This last year saw a slow down in
allocation of grants whilst a strategy for supporting the furtherance of golf
was defined. However, we still supported our traditional projects to the amount
of R535 000.
During
the year we had to say farewell to some dedicated Golforama stalwarts through
ill health. They may be gone but they will never be forgotten. Nomads members
are not getting any younger and I appeal on behalf of each Club coordinator that
everyone reading this consider getting involved, even if it is just for one day.
May I suggest that you ask those Nomads who got involved this last year and you
will see that you are missing out on a very rewarding and fun filled time.
Please remember that the effort and support to Golforama duty contributes
significantly to the Nomads aims and objectives.
The
future of the Sunshine Tour appears to be very secure with some exciting
Tournaments being discussed. The end of year schedule is also likely to change
with pressure on the dunhill and SA Open to move into November. I hope that some
of the pictures will inspire you to get involved.
