                                  50+ years of service

At a ceremony held recently at RandPark Golf Club, Nomads as a whole, but especially the Gauteng Club, celebrated it 50th Anniversary. The 5 remaining Founder Members were fêted suitably and due acknowledgement of their service and contributions to the Club was made by the various speakers at the function.

When the Mother Club, Transvaal, was founded in 1960 it is probable that committing oneself to 50 or more years of service to golf and the community at large seemed like a huge milestone expected to be achieved by relatively few, yet, here we are 50+ years later and there are still a valiant yet small group of Nomads who can be justifiably proud of having completed those 50+ years as a member of the Nomads Club.

Listed below are those names of those few who are still amongst us today who have reached that 50+ years milestone, some of whom were Founder Members of the then named Transvaal Club.

Those who have reached this point can be recognised by virtue of the distinctive tie they wear which is the normal Nomads tie but with bands of Roman numerals L in gold lettering repeated alternately with  a band of Nomads bells diagonally across the tie from top right to bottom left.

Put into perspective it should be realised that 50 years ago we had only inaugurated 1 Club. We now have 12 local Clubs and 5 International branches. It therefore stands to reason that the names listed below were inducted as a Member at our oldest Club but some have "migrated" to the later formed Clubs as can be seen from the names of the Club to which they currently are attached.

To those who are included congratulations on a wonderful achievement. It is sincerely hoped that your stay with Nomads has been productive and enjoyable.

Many of the individuals listed below are no longer active in our Club and have become Associate Members. Some are in the Non-Active category but remain Members of Nomads for the fellowship and camaraderie that they have experienced over the years.

As this page will span the time period of 50 to 55 years membership the names are listed in alphabetical order.

Arthur Ferneyhough - Western Province (Founder - Transvaal)
Jack Matthews - Southern Natal (Founder - Transvaal)
Andrew Mentis - Gauteng (Founder - Transvaal)
Doug Milne - Southern Natal
Gary Player - Gauteng (Founder - Transvaal)
Bob Truter - Gauteng
Dorian Wharton-Hood - Gauteng
Bill Wilson - Easterns (Founder Transvaal)

Many of the above have served our Club in an official capacity as a Committee Member, Captain or even on the National Executive. We thank them for their services just as we thank all the others for their participation in whatever capacity over the years.

We are grateful, honoured and proud to record the names of the few who helped contribute throughout the vast majority of our existence, to making our Club what it is today.

Congratulations to all concerned. May you go on to greater things with many more enjoyable years ahead.

We look forward to the pleasure of adding another page to our website when the L tie qualifies to become LV.
