BERT HUNT TROPHY CURRENT CLUB CAPTAIN: ROB HARRISON BRIEF HISTORY: For many years golfers from the South Coast region of Natal formed part of the Natal Nomads Club creating pressures on the total numbers which the Natal Club could accommodate. Additional pressures also arose from the increasing number of Nomads who, having in their younger years originally enjoyed their Nomads participation as part of one of the "Transvaal" group of Clubs, were now migrating, in their retirement years, to the South Coast but still wished to continue with their Nomads commitments. With the emphasis of the Nomads Golf Club being to encourage Members to play as many of the monthly meetings as possible, this has the resultant effect of restricting the overall Membership of any Club to about 200 Members. As result of the increasing pressures on Membership created by these "out of town" Members, in 1983 it was decided to investigate the possibilities of forming a new Club, Southern Natal, based on the lower South Coast region. In March 1983 the National Executive, after a full motivation by Willie Ferns
and Gilly Richardson, gave permission for the formation of Southern Natal Nomads
under the sponsorship of the Natal Club. Various "Show the Flag" meetings were
then held from August to November 1983 at Margate, Port Shepstone, Scottburgh
and Umkomaas. After much initial work by the official steering committee comprising Gilly Richardson, Gillie Sales, Hugh Purtell, Jeff Thompson, Willy Rush, John Hill, Don Throssell and Tony Platt, the inaugural game was held at Southbroom Golf Club on 4th February 1984. The, then, National Chairman Mick Sugden handed over the Southern Natal colours to the first Captain Gilly Richardson and the Southern Natal Club was born with 93 Founder members. In addition several Natal Nomads were persuaded to transfer thus forming a solid base for the new Southern Natal Club and temporarily easing the pressure on the Natal Club. Just over a year later in 1985 the Club won the first of its two Bert Hunt Trophies at the National Tournament in Cape Town. Ten years later they repeated the feat on home turf at the 2000 Millenium Nationals held over two courses, Margate and Southbroom. In 1993 Southern Natal member Grahame Harkess was inducted as National Chairman - a great honour for man and Club. This was followed in 1996 when Southern Natal Member Roel Germs was honoured by the National Executive with the award of Honorary Life Membership of Nomads for his many years of service to Golforama. |
