CURRENT CLUB CAPTAIN:          PETER RUNKEL

BRIEF HISTORY:                 The emphasis of the Nomads Golf Club is to encourage Members to play as many of the monthly meetings as possible. This has the resultant effect of restricting the overall Membership of any Club to about 200 Members. However, in the more populous areas, such as Cape Town, this means that Clubs have extensive lists of golfers wishing to join Nomads but who are prevented from doing so, sometimes for considerable periods, until a vacancy becomes available.

Pressures of Membership numbers, such as those which confronted the Transvaal Club in the 1960s, were being experienced by Western Province Nomads throughout the latter part of the 1980s. Following extensive investigation it was decided that a Boland Club would be formed in 1993 with a group of Founder Members comprising that contingent of Western Province Nomads who transferred across at that time as well as new Nomads from both the Boland and other Cape areas.
This also had the beneficial effect of enabling Western Province to bring in fresh "young" blood thus reducing the pressures on their waiting list and seriously decreasing the frustration level of those Capetonians wanting to join Nomads.

A measure of the pressure on membership which had built up in Western Province can be gauged by the fact that when the Boland Club was eventually launched in January 1993, they had 180 Founder Members and membership was immediately closed.
